RE: In the secrets we share - Amaris - 4/28/2024

Cold, hard earth struck his limbs first as the gravel of the cave pressed sharply into his pads. However, the warmth of his sister's body and the rise and fall of her chest were enough indicators of their survival that Amaris would breathe softly into vibrating air. Alive. At least for now. For no sooner, as his body had toppled his twin, did the screaming grow louder. Shrill cries between the darkened stone as air practically pulses and beats between his ears. Unlike his daring sister, Amaris would keep his eyes tightly closed with bated breaths as these demons would scurry atop vibrating wings above them.

His chin would tuck against the small of her back, finding sanctuary between the delicate hills of her shoulder blades as he breathed. In and out, Amaris would attempt to steady himself. Her voice was distant even as she spoke, not mere centimeters from his face. As though caught in a wind tunnel, he would crane a single ear (as daringly as he could) to listen. How do you know that, He hissed between the tightening of his chest.

A woosh between his fur only drew the male closer, burying his head further into the spine of his sister as he felt one of those things draw too close. Aelia, He practically whimpered. He hated every single second of this—the darkness, the shadows he knew were creeping at their sides, and whatever the Five had conjured into this cave--he hated it all.

For the moon-kissed boy, the seconds moved like years. A millennium, if he really wished to be dramatic. But at last, his sister's voice would pierce the air, and slowly, the beat of wings would recede to silence. Only then would the pale boy raise his head, blink his eyes, and glance towards a cave speckled in light. It goes...deeper? His voice would squeak at those last words, his body finally finding the courage and bravery and strength to shimmy off his sister.

A gulp fastened across his throat as he stared at each of them; all three were as hollow as his insides felt. Maybe he needed to pee. Uhm, He tried to clear his throat as sunlit eyes blinked to the furthest right. Which one do we choose...?

Because I just do. There was no rhyme or reason to it. Just like there was no rhyme or reason to Amaya's bone readings. It was a feeling — a feeling that ebbed deep within her and that she trusted. A part of her that flowed in tandem with Amaris. Only with Amaris...

She could feel the nervousness within her twin, as he nestled deeper in between her shoulder blades. Amaris' emotions started to mess with her own, she could feel the tendrils of his shadow creeping up and over her. But she would not let them conquer her like they had Amaris — and she would not let him drown either. Amaris... Her voice would beckon him, a whisper in the dark, reminiscent of their childhood nights spent coiled together, it's alright.. don't be afraid... The Daystar's head would lift like a lantern in the night, brushing her cheek against her twin's own.

Aelia felt her twin's energy finally shift, just enough to allow him the strength — the courage to lift himself off of her and stand on his own. She took a breath, able to breathe deeply again, which she would need for the foreboding choice. Seems so...

The three paths lay in front of them, a trident's choice. Amaris' question would linger in the air as Aelia thought. The Daystar closed her eyes, deeply inhaling the musty air of the cave, feeling the cold mist of the water behind her, making her shiver without Amaris' fur pressed against her own. And alone, she can feel a pull to the left. The side she is on. It is soft at first, but the longer her eyes stay closed, the more frantic she can feel the pull. It was dizzying as she opened her eyes, wobbling on her paws for a second until she leaned into Amaris for support. I... She tried to think straight, the feeling of his silver fur against her gold, centering her. Now she can feel her mind pull her forward, to the middle path. This confused her.

I... She tries again, blinking as she looked to the far right path, Does... that one call to you like... the other... does to me? She whispered, feeling a throb of panic in her chest now when she thought of venturing to the far left on her own. What felt sure, is now a dice toss into the air of chances, when the middle path started to feel like home.

Amaris

The certainty in Aelia's voice drew a dollop of courage forward. Not enough, however, to stall the lowering of his ears as they fell to a place atop his crown. The darkness was smothering, and the beating of wings had become suffocating. But the gentle rumble of his twin's words, encouragement, and trust would ultimately ease the tension in his chest, the strangled mess that was his lungs, and ultimately, bring forth a steady inhale as he finally breathed.

With the tapering of rumbles that exceeded past the cave walls, Amaris found the courage to stand, peel his body from his Twin's side, and stare off into the passages that lingered before him.

He did not feel great about it, but he had not felt great about stepping forth into this cave in the first place. It appeared their adventure was nowhere close to ending despite his now drifting hopes and dreams. Whatever pull the twins had felt toward this dark and musty entrance, a part of him wished they had never felt it in the first place.

They could be in bed, asleep, drifting to the enchanted world of dreams right now. Well, maybe not Amaris, but a boy could hope.

Amaris would steel his spine, even despite the chill that lingered. Three choices lay before them, each as cryptic and ominous as the next. Be it his anxiety or fear, Amaris could not see beyond the terrifying darkness that lingered like a promise within each. Though the far right had spoken to him before, it now lay as empty and dark as the sky. The middle, which brought a flicker of his gaze, would shift beyond his attention. As though a light had switched beneath its veiled curtain and beckoned him forward. A shadow shifted within, one he could presume only his eyes could perceive. But the last, and furthest left, drew his attention like a moth to a flame. Another moment of shifting darkness appeared to him as the shadows within played tricks on his already fragile mind. Something was in that one, too.

He could feel it.

And just as his eyes would connect with that path, Amaris would feel the dizzying weight of his sister beside him. It was for Aelia that he became strong. A force that would don a false armor atop his skin and forge a path in his twin's name. He glanced at her, eyes now expressing a shadow of concern as a voice drifted like a spell between them. Uh-huh, he murmured in a whisper, I see something in it. He couldn't explain it, for his eyes could deceive, but his intuition could not. But the one on the left, he whispered, There is something in that one too. Something, he recognized, that he had only felt when both their skin and eyes had connected.

Do... The yearling would clear his throat. Be strong, Amaris. Do you want to go in that one... He lifted a muzzle to the left, And I...I go in the other...?

A part of him hoped she would say no.

The three choices that lay before them were dizzying, each path riddled with different intentions, auras whose colors were swirling. Aelia's brows furrowed and face tightened as she stared off into each of them, knowing that one of them held the truth for the twins. But was the truth... meant for them to know alone?

Even Amaris, in his own way, pondered this question aloud. And when he did, she heard how it sounded. They had never once been alone, in their entire lives, without one another. From the womb until the tomb. She was sure of it. No. Her voice is a firm presence in the wary unknown, echoing through the corridor of the caverns. We go together. Her lunar eyes shifted phases, until they reached her twin brother, Like we always have. And leaning into Amaris, the touch of his fur was comforting, something she had always known — home. The same feeling she felt when looking into the middle path's shadows.

The middle one. Aelia stated firmly, unwilling to separate from her twin now as she hooked one of her front legs through his, nodding. It feels right. Only when she leaned into him. Alone; she could feel the darkness pulling at her, picking at the frayed edges of her mind, the untethered parts of her. That was the last thing she wanted to confront right now. Maybe another time... But this was not about only her, but Amaris too. Something had led the both of them here.

Amaris

His relief was tangible. A feeling so palpable that one could nearly rip it from his features as his ears had fallen across his crown. He sighed his relief through a wobbly smile. The bobbing of his head, delivered through a nod, cementing the decision to reality. Right. He concurred with ease, Together.

There was no way that Amaris would have gone into the darkness alone, and though it was a feat he would climb for his sister, the idea had been nothing short of insanity when he truly thought it.

The middle one, he echoed as though the path would bend to their will by somehow voicing its existence. Or perhaps it was merely his need to stall, to gather his strength before pushing forward. Amaris would lean into his sister, side by side, hand in hand; he nodded his approval despite the hammering of his heart.

Nothing would harm them when they were together, he tried to remind himself. Together, they were stronger. Together, they were unstoppable. Together, they were brave.

Let’s go. And it was he who took the first step forward, that odd kernel of hope and courage molding into his limbs as he felt his twin beside him. The shadows were nothing compared to the strength he felt beside her. He took another step forward. Wherever it leads, I am with you. A quiet vow as that golden gaze trained on the middle path’s darkness.

Bound—He would not stray from his sister’s side.

Not now.

Not ever.

Always.

Even though there were two different, single paths beckoning the twins, they were interlinked, unwilling to go alone as they were always one — stronger together than apart. Surprisingly, it was not Aelia who first urged a step forward into the darkness, but Amaris.

Wherever it leads, I am with you.' Their linked forelimbs as they muddled through the darkness together, mustering the strength to find what lay beyond that great length. And I, with you. She promises in turn, to find her footing where it always had been, beside her brother.

'Always.'

Within the tunnel, a bright light glared, imposing, almost blinding. The further the twins crept, the heavier the air seemed. What could be misconstrued from afar as a source of light was really a reflection of it. Wandering through the carved tunnel, the familiar feeling of wetness tainted the cave's ground once more. All that filled their ears was from the waterfall in the background. Aelia's shoulder brushed against Amaris' squinting, trying to focus and understand what the light truly was. It wasn't until they breached the room that the pieces fully came together.

The tunnel widened into another cavern, tight in space. In the middle; water pooled, churning softly, what seemed uninterrupted by the waterfall. The moon's reflection bounced off of the water; a skylight opening up to let the full moon's glow pour in. It was breathtaking, enough to settle Aelia into a stop, staring across the water, where the darkness took hold and it was unknown how far the water truly ran. It took her a moment to find her words, but finally, she did, I... Do you think moms know this is here? She whispered, unable to shake the feeling that something or somethings had their eyes on the two of them.

There was a movement to the water, lapping in a small circle, swirling endlessly, and she swore, she could hear it beckon her, its tendrils lapping at her paws.
