Banner Contest!

Hello Vivarium!

Staff were thinking about a new skin/site theme and thought... we have so many creative souls on Vivarium, why not see if anyone would be interested in submitting a banner to become the next theme of the site!

The idea is simple! You design a banner that you think holds the vibes of Vivarium! It can be any variety of hand-drawn art or photomanipulation (with proper credits). You can feel free to use the Boardwide Plot (Those Who Came Before) if you'd like to get creative with glowing blue runes and mystery, or you can just design a generalized banner that you feel fits Vivarium and the land of Mythris. Your art can include background, animals, wolves, and even some of your favorite characters if you'd like!

Two winners will be announced, as we will be adding TWO new themes to the site, one for dark mode and one for light mode.

You can enter your banner into ONE of the two categories, whichever you think it would look best on! Once the allotted time is up, we will host a vote where the community can decide on their favorite banners to become themes for the site!

The old themes will remain available for use as well, of course!

Happy birthday Vivarium! We have all made it another year in this beautiful community that we all love so much. This site is such a wonderful place, but it has only been able to be this great with the help of everyone here. Without your stories and unique character we would have nothing. Above all, it’s our members that make Viv what it is and we hope that will never change.

Whether you’ve been with us since the very start or just joined us this morning, we appreciate you and all the time and effort you’ve put into making this place welcoming and enjoyable for all. You’ve made our community into something we can all be extremely proud of.

Here they will share off screen visions of progress with you, if another has made a discovery it will be projected to every other individual so everyone remains on the same page in their efforts.

Happy Spring Vivarium! There’s plenty to cover in this very large announcement, so read up!

OOC HAPPENINGS
HAPPY SECOND BIRTHDAY TO VIV! We’ve made it another year together. While we hit some bumps in our road to get here we are so thankful for all of our wonderful members. Without you guys, Vivarium wouldn’t be what it is today. Thank you to our community, new and old members — even future and former members. We all love this hobby and have been doing it for years, this is our home and we can’t thank you enough for being a part of this experience.

To celebrate, we have a brand new pixel from the always-lovely Nopeita. This cute little cake can be claimed in this thread, just comment to claim!

We also have a complete overhaul of our guidebook that we will be publishing very soon! Another update announcement will be launched when the new and improved guidebook goes live. We know many things can be confusing or even contradicting in our current guide, so we’re hoping these new adjustments will help everyone in the long run!

MOD ROTATION
It’s that time of year once again! We will be releasing our moderators back into the wild and trapping new ones with the allure of food. If you would like to join the running as a staff candidate please fill out this form! These apps will close April 16th.

IC HAPPENINGS
Just to make it easily found, we have had three packs rebranded with new names. Psychí Deméni is now Skjǫldrheim, Sem’ya is now Seiiki, and Warcrest is now Hildibrandr. So don’t be surprised by all these new names on our spring map!

After so long, Overgrowth Strand has finally recovered from its devastating fire. It’s free real estate. Or... has it? Something seems off. The once-well recovering area has suddenly taken a turn for the worst. I wonder what that's about?

Valentine’s Badges are able to be claimed until April 16th

EVENT
The snow and ice are melting away before your eyes and the breeze carries a familiar warmth with it. Winter is ending and Vivarium begins to welcome spring, the season of life and new beginnings. Flocks of birds will return from their migrations, trees and foliage will regain their greenery, flowers will bloom, and the days will last longer.

It’s so beautiful, and you can feel that seasonal depression shed like a second skin.

But wait…

What was that? You suddenly feel the ground shake with a wild and unexpected aggression. As it fades away, you notice nothing seems different. Was it just a random earthquake? How strange. Though there is a small voice within the depths of your mind ”it comes from the east, to the south…”

Was it another volcano? Has a ravine cracked the earth's crust? Did a meteor hit and blow it to pieces? What has happened in the south-east? Perhaps you should investigate.

MAP CHANGES
With the shift from winter to spring, we will be updating our map. A few changes have been made and it’s time for the big reveal! Smoldering Wastes has been altered as a result of the earthquake. New areas have emerged and they’re ready to be explored!

Verdant’s Grace - a range of tropical mountains

Cerulean Falls - a giant cluster of spring sourced waterfalls

Plummeting Cliffs - a vast plain that lies at the edge of a cliff overlooking dangerous waters

Endless Plains - enhancing the natural beautiful of meadows and hills and connecting our many new biomes

Reaching Plateaus - leveled buttes and mountains filled with life

Coral Shores - a white sand beach that has a coastal reef full of vibrant colors

Stoney Cove - black sands and stone surround this cluster of tide pools

Sandstone Canyon - red rock walls and sculpted arches

Shifting Dunes - Sand Dunes that easily uphold as your traverse them yet you notice they often blow away on the wind and reform

Poseidon’s Underground - Viv’s first fully submerged subarea - A cavern system that stretches for miles, filled with fresh water springs and blue bioluminescence.

In union with our upgraded Smoldering Wastes, Spirited Highlands has also gotten a new sub area! Off the eastern coast you can spot the once-deadly volcano, though you notice it is now accompanied by a large, thickly jungled island and various sandbars. It appeared overnight, as if by magic. The Volcanic Keys offers a tropical get away, but be careful! Who knows if the volcano will erupt again in the future.

You will also notice that each main area (Northern Alpines, Spirited highlands, Great Woodlands, Westmoor Wakes, Smoldering Wastes, and Primal Savannah) has one new cave. As of right now this is no more than a single room cavern with nothing all that interesting to offer you. You can’t shake the idea that there must be more to it, but every time you look, it’s the same.

Maybe they’ll be something important soon?

BOARDWIDE PLOT
While you may be able to learn what the tremors have revealed, it is still unclear what the actual cause of it was. A simple, random earthquake? Or maybe something has appeared within Mythris…?

The Moving Isle has awoken.

Off the coast, onlookers may catch glimpses of an ominous island cloaked in thick fog. Its silhouette resembles the outline of a slumbering wolf, resting on the ocean’s horizon. There may even be times when a narrator thread will open where it's possible to see a giant wolf-like Titan wading within the water, searching for its next place of rest. Warning Characters on the Moving Isle when it relocates will be teleported to a random zone inland and will not remain on Moving Isle. Moving Isle is not a claimable territory.

While this has opened a new area of exploration, you have no idea what this thing is, how it moves, or why it suddenly appeared.

An unknown Dream Visitor will be contacting you through your dreams. They seem to be in desperate need of your help. Does it have to do with the giant, walking island? What do they need help with? Why are they asking you for your aid? You may not know it yet, but all of Mythris could be at stake! Information shared by the Dream Visitor(s)—such as their names, histories, and experiences—will be shared in this thread.

BONUS EVENT!
For April 1st ONLY characters may break the fourth wall. Your character may have a dream or vision, finally learning the truth of their existence. Their free will is nothing more than a roll of the dice bot or the fickle choices of their creator.

All that trauma, heartbreak, and pain you’ve faced? Entirely avoidable, if your writer truly wished for a peaceful life for you. Clearly they seem to get some sort of sick entertainment by watching all the things they put you through, why else would they write your story this way?

You’re nothing more than the written creation of someone that really likes wolves, like really likes wolves (I bet you half of them pretended to be a dog when they were a kid, that would explain a lot about this, wouldn’t it?). But, hey! Look on the bright side! This weird person adores you! Even if they gave you a tragic backstory and took away every ounce of optimism you’ve ever had, they get so much art of you and they can’t even show 99% of the people they know irl, which means they just like looking at you. Isn’t that sweet?

Sadly, this discovery will not stick. As you come out of the vision/dream, you will return to your pixel life of ignorance… Maybe it’s for the best.

Tunnel of Love

Howlentines is just around the corner, and it seems Mythris has gotten the memo.

While the land is still heavily laden with snow and the sharp nip of winter mercilessly bites at your heels, things are certainly different. Those strange sculptures of snow have vanished, and with them the colorfully lit pine trees. They were enjoyable, while they lasted, and they created memories you will treasure for a lifetime.

Just as quickly as things begin to look normal, you notice an odd sight — at least odd for this time of year.

Wise men say, only fools rush in
Oh, but I can’t help falling in love with you…

Pink trees, full of blooming flowers and a rich, dark bark. These mysterious trees seem unaffected by the cold, in fact they look to be thriving. And oh, *the smell* they’re emitting, how sweet and alluring. You can’t help it, how badly you wish to go and experience the lovely aroma. Go on, take a few good whiffs. What does it remind you of? You can’t quite place it, but whatever it is, it’s making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Shall I stay?
Would it be a sin?
If I can’t help falling love with you

Upon inspection, you notice a path lined with these blossoming trees (hey, have those always been there?). Green grass and a subtle warmth can be felt, as if it’s a portal into another world. Well, what’s the harm in exploring a bit further? Nothing could be worse than those freaky caves.

As you near the end of the tunnel, you can’t believe your eyes. You *know* this place, it’s a place you could never forget or mistake for another, not in a million years.

Where are you? Your previous home? A place in the world you will never return to? The place you fell in love? Whatever makes your heart happiest, is where you will be.

Welcome to The Vivarium's Howlentines Thread Mixer!

What is it? — The goal of a mixer is to randomly pair characters together to encourage new and unique interactions! Players will sign up and be randomly assigned an RP partner. Don't know what to write about? No problem! Players can even request a prompt from staff!

How do I play? — If you're interested, please reply to this thread with the provided form below. You can enter with a MAXIMUM of three of your characters.

What do I get from this? —
- First, you get to expand your character's horizons, meet and write with new people, and expand your social circle!
- Second, if your character’s thread reaches at least 5 posts, you can use it to claim the Howlentines badge!
- Third, you can use them towards the five threads you need for the OOC badge!

All across Vivarium, you will be able to find caves that you swear were not there before, you’re positive they weren’t. Yet, here they were, eerily dark within, as if light stood no chance against its shadows. Under the moonlight, an ominous fog will pour from the entrance, and you notice it looks… strange. It appears to be an unnatural, ghostly green color. Chills rush down your spine, and you can’t help but feel as if something sinister has its eyes on you, watching your every move.

Do you dare to enter its depths? This is your chance to turn back, and run.

Eye of newt, and toe of frog
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing…

The screech of bats will pierce the air, and the wind will howl, either beckoning you to venture forward or warning you to flee. Goosebumps blanket your skin, and adrenaline courses as your instincts set you on edge. Some may feel a pull, as if being forced to enter by some unknown entity. Within the cave’s darkness, you find what you most fear…

Until the end of Halloween, the caves will remain, dark and daunting. Should you enter, your character will face hallucinations of their greatest fears and phobias. Will they manage to escape, or will the cave claim them as its victim, never to see the light of day again? Be warned of the dangers, and be prepared for the worst.

This special, spooky event offers the chance of earning a Halloween badge! Our cute, little jack-o’-lantern pixel can be claimed for up to FIVE characters per player and is also claimable for your OOC account. How do you get these, exactly? SIMPLE! Your characters must have at least one thread interacting with the caves, and while this thread does not have to be finished to claim your badge, it MUST have at least five posts total. Just share the thread link and character name in a reply to this announcement thread! To earn a badge for your OOC account, you must have five threads interacting with the caverns, with at least five total posts in each thread — since this is an OOC badge, it does not have to be the same character, you can use any of your OC’s to reach this requirement!

Our haunted caverns of horrors will only be present until midnight on Halloween, October 31st. Please have all badge requests submitted by November 1st

Here comes santa paws!

With autumn coming to a close, Vivarium will be undergoing a noticeable change in season.

All will notice that those mysterious and terrifying caverns have vanished into thin air, not a single trace of their existence will remain, aside from whatever nightmares may still haunt you.

Gradually, the last of the colorful, autumn leaves will fall, and those barren boughs will be covered in snow and ice. Across our map, flurries of snowflakes with pile up until nearly every landscape is a shiny, sparkly white.

Winter is at our doorstep, and while it’s mostly bringing us a bone-chilling drop in temperature, it’s also bringing us some unexpected surprises.

Conifer trees will spring up in all climates: pines, evergreens, spruce, firs — and you will also see an *odd* type of firefly that has made their home within its branches. Not only do these bugs shine with that signature highlighter green that lights warm summer nights, they also shine in red, blue, white, and green. They remain happily within their pine-needle homes and flicker away in the night, decorating these unique trees with festive colors.

Nestled beneath these brightly lit trees will be caches filled with little trinkets such as small pelts, warm meals, fresh herbs, feathers, stones, or even coal for those that may be on the naughty list this year.

Aside from our new festive trees and Santa Paws’ caches, there will be few more winter wonderland happenings. This includes snow-animal sculptures being found and bushels of mistletoe hanging from trees — a sigh to cozy up with your beloved, take advantage of the excuse of needing warmth and enjoy your holiday snuggles.

Puppy timelines and thread mixer feedback!

This is a large announcement! Please read everything<3

Thank you everyone for your input and participation in the community poll for puppy aging! The community has voted and effective today, children below the age of 2 months will be accelerated in their growth until they hit 2 months of age, and then normal aging will resume from there!

What this means: Pups at the age of one calendar month will have the mental and physical capabilities of two-month-olds. Once they hit the age of two calendar months, they will age on the normal timeline (1 in real life day = 1 viv day). This will allow for the play of pups earlier while keeping their calendar birthdays the same.

Pups who've already been born will be continuing on the accelerated timeline as before to prevent confusion. Any new births from this point onward will follow the new rule of accelerated + real-life aging.

Additionally, now that our first-ever thread mixer and Halloween event has ended, we have a thread mixer feedback survey! We want to hear your thoughts on how our first-ever thread mixer went!

Attached below is a link to a Google form that we ask all members of Vivarium to fill out with what you thought of it, what went well/did not go well, what you'd like to see in the future, and if we should do another thread mixer again! Any and all thoughts are appreciated, and we look forward to implementing the community's suggestions!

Secret Santa: Art Exchange!

Thank you to everyone who participated this year in the Secret Santa Art Exchange! This is one of our favorite times of the year, and we are so glad you all wanted to partake in this!

Ornament Exchange!

It’s nearly Christmas Time, which means it’s officially time for Vivarium’s annual Secret Santa exchange! This year, we will be doing things a bit differently, so please be sure to read everything.

Registration will be open until November 27th, please sign up if you wish to participate. Members will be given their randomized member on November 28th and will have until December 25th to get their secret Santa Ornament sent out!

Instead of the stress surrounding trying to find the best Secret Santa gifts, we have opted in for ornaments instead! This will be Vivarium’s first ever ornament exchange and we hope you will participate! Instead of sending presents, you will be sending an ornament to your randomized member. You may buy or make this ornament yourself.

There are a few rules to keep in mind!

1. Please do not sign up if you don’t intend to actually send a gift. Any member who fails to fulfill their Santa Claus duties will be banned from such events in the future!

2. Please be thankful and kind, regardless of what you are given! Staff will not tolerate any of our members making others feel guilty about an ornament they gifted. If this behavior is spotted, you will no longer be able to participate in such events in the future.

We are also allowing members to sign up to be elves! Elves will take over as a member's Secret Santa gift giver if one of our Santa’s cannot fulfill their gift-giving role. To be an elf, simply indicate in the form.

Vivarium's First Thread Mixer!

Welcome to The Vivarium's very first Thread Mixer!

Have you been wanting to branch your character out to meet new characters and don’t know how? Are you working on skills and want some inspiration? Are any of your characters looking for something new to do? Then the Thread Mixer could be for for you!

What is it? — The goal of this Mixer is to randomly pair characters together to encourage new and unique interactions! Players will sign up and be randomly assigned an RP partner. Don't know what to write about? No problem! Players can even request a prompt from staff! These prompts can be simple, or can be Skill driven to help get more points toward Skill badges!

SPECIAL EVENT EDITION!
With our Haunted Caverns Halloween event, we are also offering a special type of thread mixer to incorporate some spooky fun! Should you mark interest in the Halloween Thread Mixer, you and your RP partner will be able to interact regardless of being in the same area or not.

How does this work? Each character will enter any of the haunted caverns, and within the dark depths you will stumble across your partner — it’s unclear how, or why, but the cavern has guided you to one another. Together, you will face whatever horror the darkness has in store.

This is ONLY applicable for those that join the thread mixer! Caves in different areas are only linked for thread mixer partners!

Autumn approaches!

With a new found chill in the air, the greenery has faded into vibrant yellows, reds, and oranges. Leaves have begun to fall from their trees, and our late nights and early mornings may be accompanied by an eerie fog. There are still evident reminders of the summer dangers everyone has faced, though now, the volcanoes lay dormant. No more does the sky darken with thick smoke nor does it rain ash and soot. The world has returned to its average, peaceful state (with a few new scorch marks, that is). While you regain a clear view across the coastal waters, it becomes evident that the western volcano is nearly entirely gone, swallowed by the ravenous sea. The eastern volcano still stands, but seems to slowly begin its descent back home, as well.

I know what you’re thinking, and no, unfortunately it is not safe to swim out towards these disappearing mounds of rock and ash. The volcanoes are still emitting high amounts of heat, warming the water around them to a dangerous level. Risking a venture to one will result in your expiration.

And, what’s this? Moments ago Mother Nature was unleashing her fury upon us all, and now she seems to be rewarding those that have survived her attempt at mass extinction. For the first few weeks of autumn, fire rainbows and undulatus asperatus cloud formations will be seen across all reaches of Vivarium.

What exactly do these things even look like? We’re glad you asked! Fire rainbows are wispy, colorful clouds; they can be compared to a daytime type of auroras Borealis. Undulatus asperatus, on the other hand, are dense waves of clouds that cover the entirety of the sky, rolling and moving like the waves of an ocean.
