the frozen river gave little to the sharadoii girl, and she was becoming frustrated. cracking the ice had annoyed her, managing a tiny trout alone for all her efforts had downright infuriated elk charm. in the end, she left off fishing and chose to scrape lichen from the frosted rocks instead. bitter stuff. caribou food!
that last rebellious thought made her blanch, and it occurred to elk charm that she was unprotected.
now she abandoned her lichen-hunt to search for feathers, one white or one red, and some sap. the amulet would dry and fall from her fur in time, but while it was present, elk charm knew her breath would come easier.

Wardruna had long since returned to the western coast along side her partner, Sheauga. The visit to the eastern island where her half siblings lived, had only made Wardruna a bit more uncertain and a bit more desperate. She knew it so time and time again that their time here in this realm of magic could be sniffed out in literally a blink of an eye. Faster then a festering wound or starving winter.

She would ask that Sheauga be hers. Ask for the family together that she had long now wanted. There wasn't an ounce more time

Wardruna wanted to do without, wanted to hold back and not. So Wardruna would leave the territory that was Northfall, following from the fjord to glacier river until she found something of worth to give to Sheauga with her proposal. It was here which Wardruna crossed paths with the elk charm woman. Hallo, She greets with a warmth, her thick tail swaying between her back legs.

one red feather found, and sap besides. elk charm noted the location for a return. but as she moved to face away, a large shadow fell across her gathering spot. quickly she looked up to see its caster: a very tall woman and powerfully built. the girl stared, way but not fearful as she might have been to see a man. "hello," came her greeting, curiosity overcoming better sense.
elk charm knew that few others spoke sharadoii, but she had thus been insulated. and she had not tried yet to learn common. but this word was one she knew. they were making the first meeting with one another, and the girl let her own tail sway in answer.
a pause followed. she pondered that stoic face.

Black as night sky. Her eyes possibly the deepest blue she had ever seen. She would parrot a hello back to Wardruna and this only. A red feather there at her feet. Wardruna's ears perked. She had once gifted a feather to Sheauga before. One which was white with grey markings that reminded Wardruna of the woman herself. This one was far more vibrant and she felt it would be a good piece to the new collection she was establishing.

Are there others where you found that? She would ask, her nose jutting to the feather. Unknowing that the woman would not understand her words at all. While caribou herds migrated through Northfall, the Vikings were by far not the same people.

elk charm goggled at the other woman, mind snapping back into discourse in time to grasp that the other asked after her feather.
she was worthless as a trader, but — the sharadoii girl pulled its crimson fletching up and offered. she made a broad gesture to the strange woman, one which asked, what will you trade?
nerves pounded in her throat, but elk charm was excited to know if the newcomer would offer anything, despite the barrier of their language.
riverstone eyes were curious despite her guard. was this one a fighter?

The other woman does not speak. She only lifts the red feather up into her mouth, her neck extending with it and not letting go, pulling back. What would she get in return if the woman gave her this?

Wardruna 'hmmm' on her lips. Snakker du nordlig tunge? (You speak northern tongue?) It might be easier if they could share words. Tungumál guðanna? (Language of the Gods?)
Wardruna looked around herself. Of course, she had not been carrying anything to offer.

Food? She then said and lifted a paw to touch an open mouth with. There were caches on the outskirts of their lands, for visitors. Maybe an easy meal would do her good if she were a lone traveler.

more words. elk charm shook her head, brow beginning to cloud with frustration. then; the universal sign of eating. food! yes. while they traveled, meat and edible plants were of monumental worth. she herself had worked tirelessly to portion food for herself and geirmundr during their journey, and was used to its demands.
hesitating to think for a moment, she set the feather back into the fur of her shoulder and tapped the ground three times, then motioned to her own mouth. red was sacred. parting with its crimson quill meant elk charm wanted enough meat to last for more than a mouthful. she had others to feed, after all.
but the darkwater eyes were warming, becoming friendlier as their communication became rich.

Those eyes- they were so deeply captivating! It made her want to rise to the fjord and stare down at the dark waters below.

Red feather tucked away to prepare for travel and a paw stamping the earth three times. Wardruna woofs to her, turning away and following the river for which she came. She spoke little now, as her words of all known languages were useless in this situation.

Northfall. Her muzzle jutting to the snow tipped mountains ahead. Wardruna. A pause to place a paw to her chest before continuing on. Once they made it to the outskirts of their claim, Wardruna seeks the closest cache. Within was a full goat leg and strips of salt-seasoned caribou, courtesy of Journey, most likely.

Wardruna lifts her head to the black female, head tilted with question. Would this do?

she followed carefully, eyes darting to and fro. elk charm would not have come with a man, not at all. but this woman would not lead her far, she felt, and in the end it was well-worth the spare of any anxieties. ah! she exclaimed, and glanced up in surprised pleasure at the tall woman. you will give me all for this? but good fortune hissed do not ask! and so the sharadoii girl only bobbed her head with great pleasure.

she plucked the feather from her shoulder and offered it with warmth to the woman who called herself; war-droo-nah, elk charm said carefully. she frowned, then touched her own chest. ȟákac'enyu'.

to her it was a flowing melody of the things which her mother had given. to another, she did not know. but it did not matter, not when sharadoii were in the valley. north-fall?

The dark woman with the deep sea eyes parroted back Wardruna's own words, to which Wardruna would nod. It would be known that the woman did know common, yet just barely so, which seemed to encircle words specifically for trade.

Hakacenyou.The viking woman spoke back the name as best that she could. Dipping her head, she would reach out to take the bright red feather from her and settling down close so that she could place her forepaw on it to keep it from blowing off somewhere in the salty breeze.

Ja. Wardruna nodded, her chin lifting as she looked out through the forestry, up towards the mountains still tipped with snow despite the warmth in the lowlands. North, always, fall. She explained as simply she could. Then, lowering her head to touch it to the feather, More? Then to the food in the cache. More. If this woman was a common tradesman, Wardruna would establish this between them.
